SRL No 498 BR Britannia No 70002 on the turntable at London Liverpool Street station on an unrecorded date. Also Gresley N2 Class No 69561 in the background

BR Britannia Class No 70002 Geoffrey Chaucer on the turntable at London Liverpool Street station in preparation for working back home. Notice the GNR/LNER/BR Gresley N2 Class No 69561 in the background on the High Level Broad Street line. The turntable at Liverpool St was 70ft vacuum operated. You will also notice that the turntable is fitted with a huge tank to enable locomotives not equipped with the vacuum braking system to be turned. The turntable had to be lengthened when the Britannia class first arrived in 1951, as it was found to be too small to accommodate the 68ft 9 inch overall length of the new engines. A move north to 12A Carlisle Kingmoor in December 1963 with a stay for four years until withdrawn 14th January 1967.
